02/03/12 - City of Derby Open Meet
Long Eaton swimmers travelled to Ponds Forge to take part in their first Open Meet of the season. City of Derby Swimming Club was hosting this popular Level 1 event which had been oversubscribed by over 3000 entries. This meet attracted some of the top British swimmers, including Derbyshire's Ross Davenport, Francesca Halsall, Elizabeth Simmonds and Liam Tancock.
Chief Coach, Spencer George, said "It was a great weekend with many swimmers hitting their Personal Best Times or getting close to them. Midland and National Qualifying Times were achieved and the swimmers showed great racing skills. It was a massive learning curve for the swimmers, having to race against current internationals and, despite some nervy performances, everyone handled themselves in a professional manner and raced really well particularly as they are still in heavy training".
It was National Qualifying Times for Kay Goulden (100m butterfly) and Tyler-Ann Black (50m freestyle),and for Ryan Cendrowski his first Midland time in the 50m butterfly.
This coming weekend, Kevin Wallbank and Tyler-Ann will be among swimmers at Corby at the Zonal Meet where they will be hoping to achieve the times needed to take them to the British Trials at the New Olympic Pool in March, whilst most of the Club's competitive swimmers will be at Long Eaton's own Open Meet at Derby's Queen's Leisure Centre.

Winter Leicester League - 1st Round
A team from Long Eaton Swimming Club travelled to Loughborough on Saturday for the first round of the Winter Leicester League and showed that the recent break over Christmas had allowed them to recharge their batteries after a very busy 2011 which had culminated in a place in the final of the Arena League. Chief Coach Spencer George Spencer said, 'this is a very important year for the club as we strive to build on the success we enjoyed last year. The performance at this gala was encouraging, I was very impressed with the competitive spirit shown, which led to us winning the gala by a convincing margin. Winning sixteen individual races and twelve of the seventeen relays illustrates the talent we have at the club. Equally important was the way that all swimmers battled to secure points for the team, both in the relays and individual races'.
Final point scores were: Long Eaton 267, Leicester Sharks A 238, Leicester Penguins C 169, Loughborough A 157, Swadlincote 122, and Leicester Neptunes A 108

Friendly Gala - Eckington Pool
A friendly gala at Eckington pool was an early opportunity for the coaches to assess both the strengths and weaknesses of the swimmers who will be competing for a place in the teams that will be swimming in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior League later in the year.
Junior Squad Coach, Alex Phillips, said 'It was a great start to the year with old Personal Best Times being smashed by the majority of swimmers. We had a great year last season, finishing 3rd in the league, but it is important not to dwell on past performances, but to look towards the future and make a determined challenge against the likes of City of Derby and Nottingham Leander for that coveted Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior League title. It was great to see some of the up and coming 9 year old swimmers coming through, with a number racing in their first ever gala, and although being very nervous, they swam hard and fought bravely.'
Nine-year old Madi Walker won both the 25 metres freestyle and butterfly events.
The result was pleasing especially as some of the swimmers from the top end of the Junior Squad were in action in the Leicester League Gala at Loughborough.
Final point scores were: Dronfield 198, Rykneld 134, Eckington 128,Matlock 114, and Long Eaton 113

Arena League - Area Final
Long Eaton A Team travelled to Coventry on Saturday to compete in the regional final of the Arena League for the first time in the Club's history. They finished in sixth position, eight places higher than they have ever finished before. Competing against much larger clubs, the swimmers came together as a team and fought for every point, finishing just ten points behind the team in fifth position. Head Coach, Spencer George, said that he was a very proud Coach, congratulated the swimmers on their skills in the water, their desire and sportsmanship in and out of the pool and showing true class is congratulating other competitors around them.
Spencer said " I am looking forward to the challenge of coming back to the final next year and trying to finish even higher in the league, something which is possible, based on last night's performance. It was a great night for Derbyshire swimming having two clubs in the regional final for the first time in years and shows what great strength there is in the County. Congratulations must go to The City of Derby team in winning the final. As a club we are starting to get the strength in depth needed to compete at the highest level and this was shown with a great performance from our B team too. If we continue improving and producing swimmers of such a high standard I am sure the B team will soon gain promotion from division 3 and in time we may even be able to field a C team. As our T shirts said, 'The future is bright, the future is Long Eaton".
Winning for the A Team in the 13 year old age group were Kay Goulden (Butterfly) and Oliver Davidson (Backstroke) and Hannah Jones in the 15 year age group (Butterfly).
For the B Team, swimming at Ilkeston, there were individual wins for Sam Burton (Butterfly) and Stephen Barrett (Backstroke) swimming in the men's Open events and for 15 year old Katherine Wheddon (Breaststroke). Bethanie then joined up with Katherine, Alex Brown and Chloe Tipping to win the 15 year age group Freestyle relay.
Coach Alex Phillips said the team 'deserved better', All the swims were excellent, the swimmers once again showing great commitment. He had particular mention for 13 year girls' team who have built a great team bond over the three galas. The final result saw Long Eaton in fourth place, just 4 points off second place.

Arena League - 2nd Round
In the second round of this year's Arena League, Long Eaton's A Team swimmers were in action at Worcester. The draw for this second round gala put them up against two winning teams from the first round, so the team knew they had to pull out all the stops for this gala and they did not disappoint. With seven wins and some very close finishes the team swam into second place behind a strong City of Derby team. Krissy Tomlinson won both the 11 year old 50 metres butterfly and freestyle, Oliver Davidson the 13 year old 100 metres backstroke and Kay Goulden the 13 year old 100 metres butterfly. New President
Long Eaton Swimming Club introduced their newly appointed President to their members at the Club's Championship Presentation evening held at West Park Leisure Centre on Saturday.
Keith Kelly has been involved with swimming in Long Eaton, firstly with Trident Swimming Club and more recently with Long Eaton Swimming Club since its formation in 2006. Keith became involved with the sport when his daughters began swimming competitively 21 years ago. He was soon found on the poolside helping out and quickly became a regular volunteer with the Coaching team, gaining both Teaching and Coaching qualifications.
When the County Squad was introduced the then Trident Coach, Mark Rose, was appointed Head Coach and Keith joined him at Derventio Excel, where he continues to assist the present Chief Coach, Andi Manley. Keith remains a member of the Long Eaton club and is always on hand to help out when required.
Keith's appointment comes about following the death of Councillor Bill Camm earlier this year. Bill became President on the formation of Trident swimming club and when Trident and Treonte decided to support the new Long Eaton club, Bill was only too pleased to be part of the new club, also being made a Life Member.
Keith says that he is humbled and honoured to be asked to fill gap left by Bill and he knows Bill will be a hard act to follow.

Belper Marlins Open Meet
Thirty four swimmers from Long Eaton Swimming Club recently attended the Belper Marlins Open Meet held at the Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby. The swimmers enjoyed a successful day with over eighty trophies being won.
For 12 year old Chloe Blaydon, two first places, two second places and three thirds earned her 30 points, to add Top Girl of the Meet award to her haul of trophies. With a total of 27 points, from four first places and a third place, 10 year old Katie Sloan was placed third.
9 year old Maddison Walker, 11 year olds Joshua Langfield (2), Joshua Bestwick (2) and Sam Frearson, 13 year old Meagan Smith, 13 year olds Erin Dilks and Daniel Sloan and14 year old Gregory Cox (2) all swam to first place in their events. There were further top three finishes for Maddi, Sam, Joshua, Erin, Daniel along with Esther Halford, Natasha Pearson, Lewis Tipping, Chloe Tipping, Vaughan Bryan, Oliver Tipping and Bethany Sharples which helped to see the Club to runner-up position just missing out on the Top Club Trophy, which they won last year
Chief Coach, Spencer George, was delighted to see the large number of swimmers from across all the Club's squads attending this meet and taking the opportunity to compete at this early stage in the season. There were many personnel best times achieved, which is a result of the hard training being put in by all the swimmers. Once again these performances are showing the continuing improvement across all the squads.
At the recent Retford Open level 1 meet four swimmers took this last opportunity to gain, or improve their Qualifying Ttimes for the Midland Short course Championships in December. Kate Williamson swam to a Qualifying Time in the 100 meters backstroke, where she will join Josephine Parker, also swimming but who had already qualified for the vent. This year nine swimmers have achieved Qualifying Times in one or more events in addition to the five Long Eaton swimmers who will represent Derventio eXcel, the County Performance Squad, where they train.

A large team from Long Eaton Swimming Club travelled to Sheffield on Sunday to compete at Ponds Forge in the Derbyshire ASA County Long Course Competition. This event, coming off the back of a period of hard training, is always eagerly awaited as this is the first indication to Coaches and swimmers as to what they can expect in the coming season. Once again their performances did not disappoint and Chief Coach, Spencer George, said that the number of Personal Best Times achieved proved that the many hours of hard training put in by the swimmers was already showing that the Club could look forward to an exciting season with many swimmers achieving their goals.

British Gas ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships
A team of Masters Swimmers
from Long Eaton Swimming Club made the short journey up the M1 to Sheffield
this weekend to compete at the British Gas ASA National Masters and Senior
Age Group Championships. They returned with a haul of 3 Gold, 7 Silver and 3
Bronze medals along with a Record Breaking performance.
The Ladies 120 plus age
group team of Rebecca Fox, Elizabeth Simpson, Laura Marinelli and Helen
Akers went one better at these short course Championships, by swimming to a
British and European short course Record in the four by 200metres
freestyle relay, adding it to the British long course Record they achieved
in the event earlier in the year. They also won Gold in the same age group
in the four by 50m relay and silver in the four by 100m relay in a time
inside the old British Record. As lead off swimmer in this event, and
therefore able to set an individual time, Rebecca was also able to claim the
British Record in the 30-34 years age group for the 100 metres freestyle.
Rebecca and Helen joined
Greg Cherry and Colin Prescott to take Silver in two very close finishes, in
both the mixed freestyle relay at 400 and 800 metres in the 120 years plus
age group. It was also Silver for the 200 years plus team of Maggi Tuck,
Mary Holland with Julie Phillips and Fiona Starbuck, neither of whom had
swum competitively for many years, in the 200m freestyle relay.
The team entered a total of
15 relay teams across the weekend and in addition to the European record
many performances bettered the existing British Records, only to be pipped
into second place.
Mary Holland was the only
individual Gold medal winner and this came in the 100metres freestyle in the
65/69 years age group. Elizabeth and Colin, swimming in the 35-39 years age
groups each took Bronze in the 200metres individual medley and it was
another medal for Elizabeth, this time Silver in the 400metres freestyle and
in the same event, a Silver for Mary too. Pete Irving took Silver in
the 45/49 years age group in the 200metres backstroke.
Chief Coach Spencer George
said he was delighted with the performance of the Masters Squad at this
three day event proving that, across the board from the Development Squad to
the Masters Squad, the club is improving at a rapid pace and is set to
become one of the most successful clubs in the Region. He had a special
mention for ladies who achieved the European record and congratulated all
the swimmers on their performances and for helping to raise the profile of
swimming in Long Eaton.
Masters Coach, Dave Akers,
had high expectations of the swimmers after a very successful training cycle
and he was not disappointed. As well as record breaking and medal winning
performances all of the swimmers rose to the occasion and produced some
outstanding swimming with many masters personal best times along with a
handful of lifetime best times. ‘I was particularly happy with the way that
the group came together as a team and encouraged and promoted great
performances. To be able to take fifteen relay teams onto the national stage
and come away with a number of medals is an indication that Long Eaton
Masters swimming is on the up and will continue to grow and become a major
force in UK masters swimming. Indeed, I am looking to take a team to the
World Masters Swimming Championships in Riccione in Italy in the summer of
2012.

National
Arena Swimming League
Long Eaton Swimming Club
started their campaign this weekend, in the National Arena Swimming League,
with the A Team travelling to the Pingles Leisure Centre in Nuneaton for the
first round. Competing in Division One brings the team up against some of
the best swimmers in the West Midlands Division and Saturday was no
exception, being drawn against five teams that finished above them in the
League last year. Finishing above two of these teams on Saturday, and just
nine points behind another, was a massive achievement for all the swimmers
who fought bravely for every point. The overall points do not reflect the
closeness of most of the races and on another day the touches could have
gone to Long Eaton swimmers. Winners on the night were Krissy Tomlinson (2)
and Kay Goulden.
The B Team who compete in
Division 3, travelled to the Snowdome pool in Tamworth. Competing against
other clubs’ A teams, the team came away with a well-deserved third place.
Fighting for every point, this team showed that the club is now growing in
strength and depth. Winners were Helen Akers, Elizabeth Simpson and Callum
Henley. Katherine Williamson, Chloe Blaydon, Laura Marinelli and Hannah
Dowell joined Helen and Liz to win the Open Ladies freestyle relay. The 13
year old girls’ team of Erin Dilks, Lucy Parsons, Chloe Blaydon and Bethany
Dennis joined forces to win their medley relay. With many other encouraging
performances from swimmers experiencing their first taste of this level of
team competition, the team are looking forward to the second round in
November.
Chief Coach Spencer George
praised both teams for their performance and was pleased with the commitment
shown. He said this showed how far the Club had come and if the swimmers
continued this steady improvement the club can look forward to winning these
galas in the not too distant future. The team spirit in the Club is a credit
to all the swimmers and Coaches and they can be proud of these two amazing
performances.
10/10/11 - The new season
starts....
Long Eaton Swimming Club
had their season’s first round of competitive galas this weekend. With the
club involved in three levels of competition, from C grade all the way to
Level 1. The swimmers are currently in heavy training and had not tapered
for the weekend, however they still managed to gain a lot of Personal Best
Times and some came home with speeding tickets for being too fast for the
level of competition they were at, along with a trophy case full of medals
and awards for Top Boys and Girls in their age group. The winning of “Top
Club” Trophy at two galas the same weekend was an incredible start to the
season and bodes well for the new season. Several swimmers gained Regional
Qualifying Times and some National Times, and Head Coach, Spencer George,
said, "It is pleasing to see the swimmers swim so fast under the
circumstances, with many of them averaging over 3500m an hour in training at
the moment. What was also pleasing was the attitude of the swimmers; they
were courteous and professional at all three galas and handled victories
with the same grace as they would have handled defeats, showing great
sportsmanship and maturity. They are a credit to the club, it's coaches and
themselves.
The squad in action at the
Derventio Level 2, two day meet at the Queen’s Leisure Centre in Derby,
stepped up to the challenge and all made an impressive start to the season.
With medals for the first three in each age group in each event, gold medals
were won by 11year old Krissy Tomlinson (10), 13 year old Oliver Davidson
(8), 15 year old Kevin Wallbank (4), 12 year olds Kay Goulden, William
Foster, 14 year old Tyler-Anne Black, 10 year old Katie Salone and 9 year
old Maddison Walker. With more top three places for these swimmers, added to
by medals for 12 year old Elle Pryce, 15 year old Mischa Menzies,15 year
old Ben Goulden and 11 year Sam Frearson, all swimmers contributed to the
points tally that saw them receive the Top Team Trophy presented by the ASA
East Midland Region President Terry Bream.
For 9 year old Maddi Walker
(pictured below) it was a brilliant first Open Meet. Not being able to
compete until reaching her ninth birthday, Maddi was nine just a week ago
and to come away with four medals including Gold at this level of Meet
certainly marks her out as a real prospect.
Whilst these swimmers were
at Derby, another team were at the Rykneld Graded Open Meet at Clay Cross.
Again with almost every swimmer taking part getting at least one trophy for
finishing in the top six, it was a very fired up squad who carried off the
Top Club Trophy. Helping to add to the final points tally it was five first
places each for Joshua Halford and Jacob Hunt, 9 year old Lana Dilks, 11year
olds Imogen Marshall (2), Oliver Tipping and Lydia Marshall, 12 year old
Kathryn Parsons, Kyle Hazelton and Ruth Witten, 13 year olds Lucy Parsons
(3) and Vaughan Bryan. With more top six finishes for these swimmers and
also 9 year old Mimi Roberts, 10 year old Esther Halford, 11 year olds
Natasha Pearson, and Laura Wilcox, 12 year old Katie Tew, 13 year olds
Christopher Stray and Isobelle Heath, it was a very successful first gala of
the season for these swimmers, many who will looking to step up their level
of competition during this season. At graded Meets, swimmers who go faster
than the upper limit time are awarded speeding tickets. This usually occurs
where swimmers have improved significantly since their entry was submitted
and for Imogen, Ruth, Christopher and Kyle there were speeding tickets to
add to their trophies.
A small number of swimmers
travelled to Sheffield’s Ponds Forge to the Robin Hood Level 1 meet where
they gained valuable experience in a Long Course, 50 metre, pool.
Next weekend sees the first
round of the National Arena League where two teams are fielded and certainly
there is an excited expectancy amongst the Club members of how they can
progress through the three Regional rounds.

End of Season Review
As the swimmers at Long
Eaton Swimming Club enjoy a two week break, the Coach reflects on his first
year as Chief Coach. Spencer George took over the reins last September and
pays tribute to his team of Squad Coaches. It has been success upon success
across all the squads. For the Masters and Senior swimmers it was a visit
from Mark Foster that set the benchmark for a season that saw European and
British records achieved.
More swimmers are moving
outside to swim in Open Water events and for Neil Meadows it was winning the
Arthur Ayres Trophy for endeavour, along with 3rd place in his first 3,000
metre Open Water swim at Coniston Water. Triathletes, Greg Cherry and Sam
Parker have had a busy year including joining squads travelling abroad to
represent the Country.
The
number of swimmers now training with Derventio, the Derbyshire elite squad,
has increased from four to seven.
There was an increase in
numbers of swimmers achieving Midland Age Group and Youth qualifying times,
along with the number achieving the Qualifying Times to swim at Level 1 Open
Meets.
An improved position in the
Arena National League, along with reaching the final of the Leicester League
and Derbyshire and Nottingham Junior League shows that there is increase in
depth and strength across the whole Club.
The season was brought to a
close with the Club Championships that saw some exciting races and 43 new
Championship Best Times achieved, This provided an opportunity for Coaches,
Parents and Swimmers to see the results of all the hard work that has gone
on during the last year.
It comes as no surprise to
the Club that Spencer is to receive an award from Derbyshire Sport in
recognition as one of Derbyshire’s most committed Coaches.

Jared Archer and William Foster which helped to keep the team in contention
throughout the gala.
Alex Philips, Coach of the
Junior 3 squad said that” last year we just missed out on the final, so
finishing third this year is an indication that all the hard work put in by
the swimmers and Coaches is paying off”. Alex thanks the parents for their
continued dedication in support of the Club, in not only getting the
swimmers to training but also onto the poolside at galas. Yesterday the
orange of Long Eaton was certainly the most colourful both on poolside and
in the crowd. The future is certainly looking bright! Final points City of
Derby 196, Nottingham Leander 163, Long Eaton A 127, Belper Marlins 109, and

Callum comes on board as
the club’s Strength and Conditioning Coach after graduating from Lincoln
University with a Degree in Sport and Exercise Science, specifically in The
Physiology of Elite Performance, Strength and Conditioning and Nutrition.
The addition of Strength and Conditioning Coach to the in house team is a
great benefit to the club. They have also managed to get support from
Clifford’s Gym in Long Eaton, where the club will train twice a week along
with two more strength and conditioning sessions at West Park Leisure
Centre. In recent times the importance of strength and conditioning in
sports has become more and more vital, especially in swimming where the
swimmer has to have the strength to hold their body high in the water.
Long Eaton Head Coach,
Spencer George, said "I am delighted with Callum’s appointment; as he is a
swimmer himself the training will be specific to our sport. Those taking
part in the programme will see the benefits in their races as their personal
best times will drop even more than those swimmers around them who only do
pool work.
Having worked with the
British Swimming strength and conditioning coach on several courses, I
understood that this was an area the club needed to improve on, and seeing
the performances of swimmers like Fran Hassall and Liam Tancock improve
since following a strength and conditioning program, I wanted to set one up
as soon as possible. The two sessions a week at Clifford's gym are a massive
aid to the swimmers as the gym has the space and equipment needed for us to
run a successful programme. I am really looking forward to seeing how the
swimmers following the program improve”.

20/03/11 - Mark Foster swim
clinic
It is not every day that
you get to meet a true sporting legend, but for twenty seven members of Long
Eaton Swimming Club and two pupils from Trent College that is precisely what
happened last Sunday. In fact they were able to go one step further when
they had the opportunity to train with five- time Olympian, and Strictly
Come Dancing contestant, Mark Foster.
Mark visited Long Eaton to
give a swim clinic that had been arranged by new Masters Coach, Dave Akers,
to a group of Long Eaton’s Masters swimmers, aged between 18 and 65, and two
pupils from Trent College, where the event was hosted.
Mark spent an hour with the
swimmers in the pool giving tips and advice on technique as well as doing a
number of demonstrations that saw him strip to his Speedos! The session
wound up when he took on Pete Irving, one of Long Eaton’s elite men, in a 25
yard sprint. Mark, as expected, cruised to victory in a time of 9.72 seconds
1.8 seconds in front of Pete and a pool record was claimed. I suspect it
will be some time before the pool at Trent College has its record broken
again!
After the pool session they
decamped to the Obolensky building at Trent College for a much needed boost
of caffeine and sugar in the form of tea, coffee and biscuits. They were
then treated to forty five minutes of Mark talking about his career, why he
has been so successful, and passing round a couple of mementos including his
first international medal from 1986, his last from 2008, and the jacket he
wore when carrying the Union Flag when he led out the British Team at the
2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Mark is a very down to
earth character, and was happy to mingle with the swimmers and chat about
anything. In fact he led the birthday celebrations for Maggi Tuck, lighting
the candles on her cake and starting a chorus of Happy Birthday.
His final duty, before
photos and autographs, was to help distribute the 30 pairs of goggles kindly
supplied by Speedo to all of the attendees.
This was a fantastic event
for all those involved, and has provided fresh motivation for a very
talented group of swimmers. Expect to read more about the exploits of this
team in the very near future.

spirit shown throughout the gala, and the excellent results, with many
Personal Best Times, are a reflection of all the hard work that is taking
place at training sessions. Most of the swimmers won at least one trophy and
for some it was their first Open Meet trophy.

- End of Season Round-up
Swimmers from Long Eaton Swimming
Club rounded off a busy year with successes at the end of season meets that
they recently took part in.
Helen Akers and Rebecca Fox
returned earlier this week from the World
Masters Swimming Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, where after
three days of competition the pair came away with some very impressive
results. In the 35-39 year old age group Helen came 13th in the 100metres
freestyle, 11th in the 50metres and 7th in the 200metres. In the 30-34 year
old age group, Becky came 5th in the 50metres freestyle, equal 4th in the
50metres butterfly and collected a bronze medal for her third place in the
100metres freestyle.
For 14 year old Kevin Wallbank who trains with the
Derventio Excel County Squad it was a successful climax to his season with
the British Gas Age Group National Championships at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge
pool, where he was a member of a very successful relay squad who improved on
their entry times and made the finals in all their events, making it to
bronze medal position in the 4 by 200metres freestyle. Kevin also swam in
the 200metres butterfly where he once again swam a personal best time.
The Northampton and Chesterfield Open meets saw personal
bests for most swimmers who competed. At Northampton, Mischa Menzies reaped
the rewards for the busiest weekend with 2 gold medals and a further six top
three finishes. There were gold medals for Josephine Parker (3), Rebecca Fox
(2) and Callum Henley. Finishing in top three positions were Greg Cherry
(3), Chloe Scattergood (3), Callum Henley (3), Francesca Harris (2), and
Josephine Parker, Chantelle Ridgway and Katherine Williamson.
At the Chesterfield Summer Splash Open Meet Tyler-Anne
Black was on a winning streak, taking eight first places. Again Mischa
Menzies was in action, this time taking five first places and a further five
top three placings. Other winners were Francesca Harris (2), Joshua Bestwick
and Joshua Langfield.
Along with further awards for Francesca (2) and Joshua
Langfield (1), others that finished in the top three were Beatrice Roberts

The swimmers are now taking a well earned rest, to return
for the start of next season which will continue to build on the successes
of this last year and move forward to help more swimmers reach their
potential and enjoy the experience of being part of a successful team.
